Browning's darker loveCompare the way Browning presents the darker aspects of love in 'My Last Duchess' and 'Porphyria's Lover'.Browning's darker love
A Victorian poet called Robert Browning wrote both 'My Last Duchess' and 'Porphyria's Lover'. Many people in the Victorian period had an interest the way the human mind works. In both of these poems the narrative voice is of the protagonist. The poems are dramatic monologues meaning that only one person speaks throughout the whole poem. This means that the poem is told from only one person's point of view. This means the reader has to ask themselves if the narrative voice is reliable or unreliable. 'My Last

My BearMy BearMy Bear
Soft light dances on the gentle bears fur, Cumbersome padded-paws rest so gentle. Reflections, mirrored in docile eyes, blur, Watching us with a smile sentimental.
Looking deep into the bears knowing gaze. His eyes, exuding love, help me to see It will all be alright in this mind-maze, My bear is alive and will protect me.
With a false self-importance we all stand, Observing customs evolved from our fears Or looking to great men to understand - Surviving's the only truth it appears.

'Do one thing and say something cryptic But the styles always clash. One thing I know for sure The hypothetical won't work anymore... This sacrament is sacrilege and sentimental, Deity experimental - Faith is accidental. ...You'll never censor me, you'd better cherish me. My reason has a voice, Freedom's gone but we'll always have a choice. My present future tense; It doesn't make much sense. I'm coming after you. Fuck you all; I'm the only point of view.' ~ Slipknot
'What is not so generally recognised is that there can be no way of proving that the existence of a god, such as the God of Christianity, is even probable. Yet this also is easily shown. For if the existence of such a god were probable, then the proposition that he existed would be an empirical hypothesis. And in that case it would be possible to deduce from it, and other empirical hypotheses, certain experiential propositions which were not deducible from those other hypotheses alone. But in fact this is not possible. It is sometimes claimed, indeed, that the existence of a certain sort of regularity in nature constitutes sufficient evidence for the existence of a god. But if the sentence "God exists" entails to more than that certain types of phenomena occur in certain sequences, then to assert the existence of a god will be simply equivalent to asserting that there is the requisite regularity in nature; and no religious man would admit that this was all he intended to assert in asserting the existence of a god. He would say that in talking about God, he was talking about a transcendent being who might be known through certain empirical manifestations, but certainly could not be defined in terms of those manifestations. But in that case the term "god" is a metaphysical term. And if "god" is a metaphysical term, then it cannot be even probable that a god exists. For to say that "God exists" is to make a metaphysical utterance which cannot be either true or false. And by the same criterion, no sentence which purports to describe the nature of a transcendent god can possess any literal significance.' ~ A.J. Ayer

'My friend, I know Christianity is true because God's Spirit lives in me and assures me that it is true. And you can know it is true, too, because God is knocking at the door of your heart, telling you the same thing. If you are sincerely seeking God, then God will give you assurance that the gospel is true. Now, to try to show you it's true, I'll share with you some arguments and evidence that I really find convincing. But should my arguments seem weak and unconvincing to you, that's my fault, not God's. It only shows that I'm a poor apologist, not that the gospel is untrue. Whatever you think of my arguments, God still loves you and holds you accountable. I'll do my best to present good arguments to you. But ultimately you have to deal, not with arguments, but with God himself. ... Therefore, when a person refuses to come to Christ it is never just because of lack of evidence or because of intellectual difficulties: at root, he refuses to come because he willingly ignores and rejects the drawing of God's Spirit on his heart. No one in the final analysis really fails to become a Christian because of lack of arguments; he fails to become a Christian because he loves darkness rather than light and wants nothing to do with God.' ~ Dr. Craig
'Human language appears to be a unique phenomenon, without significant analogue in the animal world... All over the place, from the popular culture to the propaganda system, there is constant pressure to make people feel that they are helpless, that the only role they can have is to ratify decisions and to consume... Any dictator would admire the uniformity and obedience of the U.S. media... Propaganda is to a democracy what the bludgeon is to a totalitarian state... Censorship is never over for those who have experienced it. It is a brand on the imagination that affects the individual who has suffered it, forever... Education must provide the opportunities for self-fulfillment; it can at best provide a rich and challenging environment for the individual to explore, in his own way... Everybody's worried about stopping terrorism. Well, there's a really easy way: stop participating in it... I have often thought that if a rational Fascist dictatorship were to exist, then it would choose the American system... If the Nuremberg laws were applied, then every post-war American president would have been hanged... In this possibly terminal phase of human existence, democracy and freedom are more than just ideals to be valued - they may be essential to survival.' ~ Noam Chomsky
